T Y P O G R A P H Y  A N A L Y S I S

MOJO is a word used to describe magic, enchanments, a unique feature and even sex appeal. This really fits the target audience of MOJO as they are usually expremely passionate about their music and often take it as a way of life. It also fits with the time period that classic rock was most popular, the '60s to the '80s where mojo was a mainstream word. The actual text is very large and dominates the top of the cover which immediately grabs people's attention and encourages them to read the cover. the text also has a subtle dropshadow which adds a degree of separation between the main image and the title which adds a lot of depth to the cover. The strapline ''the music magazine'' almost sounds like a boast, as if they have absolutely zero competition. The font is it presented as if it is handwritten which could be seen as a ho,age t classic rock culture where artists would sign their fans records and T-shirts.

KERRANG! is derived from the sound an electric guitar makes when a harsh chord is payed on it. This fits perfectly with the punk roc genre of the magazine as most punk songs contain two or more electrictric guitar which usually play very loud and harsh chords. The font itself appears damaged and contains cracks in it as if it has been smashed. Damaged edges suit the ''rough'' rock and roll lifestyle and also fits with a grundge theme where the font could be seen as being in disrepair or an abused state. The smashes across the title gives an aggressive feel as if someone has taken out anger on it which would also compliment the genre in which a lot of the songs are very agrresive or angry. It could also be seen as a homage to the roots of punk rock where the artists of some rock and roll bands such The Who would smash up their guitars and equipment at the end of each gig.

magazine was originally titled Cue to indicate the cueing a record. The name was changed to Q to eliminate any confusion that is could be a snooker magazine. The font used is very formal and is placed over a bright red square which contrasts with it very effectively. There is also a dropshadow under the Q which helps give the logo some depth and make it appear as if the logo is floating above the page. Due to the style of the fotn it appears as if it's a newspaper which gives the impression that anything on the front is as or more important than the articles in the newspapers it woul sit beside. Also, the formal font helps give the magazine a smart and upper class brand image.
